Infomal Evaluation
I think the fonts used worked well as it gave a more informal style to my pages and added to the over all grunge theme of the magazine, I used this type face as I believe it closely links to the genre of rock music.
Also I think the style the interview was conducted in worked well. I opted for a more informal chat which I think will engage the reader more then the standard question and answer structure, as it has a more personal quality. When I tested my product on my target audience this informal style appealed to my audience as they said it was more engaging.
My weakest point with in this project was imagery, a wider range of photographs would have made my publications aesthetically more interesting and this iconography would have appealed more to my target audience. This idea of incorporating more imagery into my pages was mirrored in my feed back, as my tester said ‘The use of more photographs in the publications would have improved the project by far.’

Contents - Preliminary
front cover - preliminary
To further improve my design i would change the background image in composition as i think an image where there is more going on would be more interesting and relevant.

Logo Research and Initial design
Q magazines logo is very simplistic in design but this simplicity makes it very bold and eye-catching, the colour scheme used red and white also adds to the eye catching over all composition of this logo.
Kerrangs logo has a very urban feel to it this reflects the content of the magazine, there is also a tag line with this logo which is a good selling point as it is catchy and short.Sunday, 4 January 2009
Double Page Spread - Research
i have decided to analyse this spread take from the most popular rock magazine on the market - kerrang!

Upon analysing this article i believe that the relationship between text and imagery plays a key role in making the piece aesthetically well composed, this makes the article attention grabbing and makes people read it.
The layout has been carefully composed, the large sepia image is quite iconic, it also gives you your first insight into the band, giving the reader a glimpse of what the band is about and also allows the reader to illicit what of style of music the band are.
Text also plays a key convention in this double page spread, the variation of font size and styles keep the pieces looking interesting and therefore engage the reader.
There is an over all theme to this piece the sepia imagery accompanied by matching text create a bold foreground as they are presented to the reader on a black background.
From analysing this one piece i believe to create an authentic looking piece i must consider the following key conventions:
- Title & sub headings - font/size/layout/colour.
- imagery - size/positioning in relation to text/ colour
- main text- font/size/

market research
In order to gather my required information regarding the circulation and sales figures for the magazine kerrang! which has a wide cult following."Target audience
Kerrang! has a weekly circulation of 70,000, and a readership of approximately 542,000.
The core target audience for Kerrang! is 15-24 year olds with a 60:40 male/female split.
Kerrang! readers are sharp, individualistic and above all fanatical about their music, buying on average 31 CD albums a year.
Kerrangs! readers are immencely loyal and have created a cult following, In essence this courpourate identity creates a club in which people who would normally be considered "different" with a sense of community allowing them too hold the concept there are other people with the same taste in music as them."This shows that the magazines containing this music genre are usually seen as "alternative magazines" have been able to break into the mainstream and now play a vital role in the publicising of rock music.
Considering this research i have gathered i believe there is a real market my magazine would appeal to and therefore my chosen genre is suitable and has potential marketability.
research - already on the market

Firstly I am going to analyse the front cover of popular indie rock magazine NME :
This magazine cover has achieved a look that represents rock indie music, this has been achieve by creating a messy collage of things we stereotypically associate with this genre of music, the iconography is laid out in an uncontrolled manner and this chaos is associated with rock music so this convention establishes the magazine firmly in it's genre and makes it appeal to its target audience of indie/rock music followers.
The text in this cover plays a key role in anchoring the images and also gives an idea of contence with in the magazine. The main text "The Greatest Indie Anthems Ever" has been centered and is in a bold typeface that grabs attention of the reader immediately, this instantly gives the reader information on what to expect from the magazine.
The sub heading under the main heading has been placed on the magazine cover at a canted angle again adding to the disorganised urban look of the magazine.
The logo plays a key role in every magazine, it creates a sense of corporate identity, the logo has been created using a colour scheme that occurs offten in logos of magazine (red and white) this is because these colours are bold and draw attention. I will consider this key convention when creating my magazine.
